KUCHING: Malaysia needs a “grand national coalition”, representing all major interests, groups, and stakeholders for a stable and strong government after the 15th general election (GE15).

The new government must restore national political consensus (NPC) to address all elements that would ensure long-term national political stability, said National Council of Professors Malaysia (MPN).

The NPC which was crucial to build a strong “consociational democracy” must involve all major races and stakeholders including the interests of the people of Sarawak and Sabah,” said its president Prof Datuk Dr Raduan Che Rose in a media statement today (Aug 17).

Raduan said: “This is the core of long-term political stability for Malaysia whose society is multi-ethnic and multi-stakeholders and to foster national unity”.

He said the council was hopeful that the new federal government would be stable, robust and competent in uplifting the people’s livelihood and restore the country’s economy; had greater capability to weather all challenges and transform Malaysia into a developed nation.

The statement was issued in light of the current political imbroglio, which culminated in the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister and following a deliberation by 15 professors from different academic background on August 16.

Muhyiddin has been appointed as a caretaker prime minister until a new prime minister is appointed. He resigned after he lost his parliamentary majority.

As at today, however, there was no clear indication on who would be appointed as the new prime minister following none of the MPs seems to have a majority support.

Raduan said if the new federal government was to be headed by the proposed National Movement Council (Mageran), the same should also apply. The establishment of a Mageran was proposed in the event there was not a single MP that could secure parliamentary majority to be appointed the new prime minister.
