KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) is calling on pet owners to vaccinate their pets against rabies during the upcoming AgriCOP programme on May 20, organised by the Department of Veterinary Services of Sarawak (DVSS) and the Department of Agriculture (DOA) at Kampung Semeba Hall.
Its chairman Tan Kai said in an interview with New Sarawak Tribune yesterday that the vaccination programme is a joint effort between the council, DVSS, and the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (SSEU) to prevent rabies cases in the state.
In addition to the vaccination, the event will also provide microchipping and licensing for dogs, along with informative talks on responsible pet ownership and dog bite prevention.
According to Tan Kai, PMC has caught 420 stray dogs from January to April this year, and caught 1,175 stray dogs last year, the highest number among the 26 local councils in Sarawak.
PMC, together with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), is currently conducting a joint anti-rabies operation in Kuching Division from May 8 to 12.
Pet owners are reminded to keep their pets inside their house compounds during the operation to avoid getting caught, as pets found outside the house compound will be caught and not able to be claimed back by their owners.
