KUCHING: Sape was once a mainstay in traditional rituals at longhouses in Sarawak but has over the years evolved into an instrument embraced by modern-day music.
Bau native Jerremmy Mikka Luget, for instance, prides himself on being able to play the sape deftly.
“I started quite late in this arena at the age of 14 but because of my deep interest to explore the traditional musical instrument, everything has turned out well,” he said at the Citrawarna Keluarga Malaysia exhibition site, Waterfront, here on Thursday (Feb 24).
Emmy, the name he prefers to be called, said the experience of playing the sape since 2013 has led him to various settings in the music scene.
He has also participated in numerous competitions to challenge himself as well as to improve on his skills and gain experience along the way.
“Throughout my involvement, I have received awards such as Best Musician in certain categories as well as other related certificates,” he said, adding that he took over a year to master playing the sape.
” I want to succeed even more in this field to be an inspiration to the young people,” he said.
