KUCHING: A major project to extend the Kuching Waterfront from Kampung Bintangor to Satok Bridge is in the pipeline.
Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki announced the initiative today during a press conference after distributing ang pao’s to underprivileged students at the Chung Hua Middle School No. 4.
“This extension is a significant plan to enhance the city’s connectivity and charm. The project is currently in the discussion and planning stages, with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) as the implementing body,” he said, adding that a meeting with DID is scheduled early next year to finalise details, including timelines and budget allocations.
The construction will begin after the completion of the Bintangor Bridge, which is expected to be operational before Hari Raya, weather permitting.
Ibrahim said temporary access routes for the bridge are expected to open by the end of this month, facilitating better connectivity for residents.
“The plan is to begin the waterfront project after the Bintangor Bridge is ready. Once this milestone is achieved, we will synchronise the timeline for the new waterfront development,” he added.
He also said several other projects, including the development of 271 affordable housing units in Segedup. Currently, land reclamation and drainage work are underway, with infrastructure development expected to follow mid-year.
“While the land is being prepared, discussions with the government are ongoing to determine the application process for these houses. The goal is to provide affordable homes for the local community,” he said.
In addition to housing, he said other rakyat-centric projects such as home renovations for low-income families and upgrades to basic infrastructure, including electricity, water supply, and drainage systems.
“These initiatives reflect our commitment to improve the lives of Sarawakians. We aim to ensure that development benefits everyone, from urban centres to rural areas,” he said.
