PUTRAJAYA: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will consider suitable candidates for the Rantau state assembly by-election and make the final decision at the party’s political bureau meeting, said PKR Advisory Council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that the position of Dr S Streram as Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate who was treated unfairly in the 14th General Election (GE14) would also be taken into account.

“We have not decided on a candidate yet. The political bureau will convene and discuss it,” she said when asked by reporters whether Dr Streram would be nominated again for the Rantau by-election.

Dr Wan Azizah, who is also the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, was met by reporters after the presentation of the ministry’s Excellent Service Awards here today.

In GE14, the Barisan Nasional candidate and Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, was declared the winner of the seat uncontested after Dr Streram was not allowed into the nomination centre because he did not have an Election Commission (EC) pass.

Dr Streram then filed a petition to nullify the decision of the EC which declared Mohamad as the winner of the state seat.

The Seremban Election Court on Nov 16 declared Mohamad’s unopposed victory for the Rantau state seat null and void.

Last month, the Federal Court dismissed a petition filed by Mohamad to set aside the decision of the Seremban Election Court, thereby paving the way for the Rantau by-election. – Bernama
