SIBU: The first phase of the construction of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) New Office, funded under the State’s 12th Malaysia Plan with a total cost of RM4.1 million, began today (Jan 3).

SRDC Chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai mentioned that the first phase involves civil engineering works, including earthworks, piling works, surface water drainage, retaining walls, and mechanical services, with completion expected by August 2025.

“This office will be located at the centre of the Sibu Jaya Township, strategically positioned to serve the people under SRDC’s jurisdiction, including those living in suburban and rural areas,” he said during a press conference in conjunction with the project handover to the contractor at the project site yesterday (Jan 3).

Sempurai emphasised that the current SRDC office, located at Wisma Sanyan and outside its jurisdiction area, sometimes poses challenges in providing services, as it is not easily accessible, particularly for rural communities.

“Almost 70 per cent (of the area under SRDC’s jurisdiction), if I calculated correctly, consists of semi-urban and rural areas.

“It is quite difficult for us to deliver our services (without an administrative office within SRDC’s jurisdiction), and this is the first step for us to improve our services because, as you all know, when your office is located within your jurisdiction, it makes a difference,” he said.

He expressed hope that the new building, once completed, would become a catalyst for development in the surrounding area, particularly with the presence of the Pan Borneo Highway and the expansion of Sibu Jaya as the “Twin City of Sibu”.

Meanwhile, regarding subsequent phases, Sempurai said that the council would apply for RM40 million in funding under the State’s 13th Malaysia Plan for the second phase, which includes the office building, landscaping, mechanical and electrical services, and external works.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the groundbreaking ceremony after the Hari Raya celebration this year.

Also present were Sempurai’s deputy Councillor Wong Ching Yong and SRDC Secretary Ng Siang Wei.
