KUCHING: Pewaris PRS, the youth wing of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), is playing a vital role in nurturing future Dayak leaders by engaging members aged 18 to 28.
PRS president Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum stressed the importance of involving youth in politics early.
“We must capture their interest, encourage them to be part of our movement, and involve them in politics and societal progress, especially within the Dayak community,” he told Sarawak Tribune at the PRS Women’s Day event here last night (Mar 22).
“If we do not engage them early, they will be occupied with other things, whether in their careers, social circles, or personal interests. That is why Pewaris must intensify efforts to attract young talent and ensure they dedicate their time and energy to advancing the Dayak people.”
Salang highlighted that Baleh assemblyman Nicholas Kudi, who leads Pewaris, has been working to expand youth engagement beyond Baleh, ensuring all PRS divisions actively develop young leaders.
The party provides leadership training, exposure to political decision making, and community engagement opportunities to build a strong foundation of future leaders who will uphold and champion the interests of the Dayak people.
He emphasised that young people should not only be encouraged to enter politics but also given the right platforms and mentorship to prepare them for leadership roles.
“Leadership does not happen overnight. It is a process that requires learning, guidance, and experience. That is why it is crucial for young people to start early, learn from those before them, and prepare for the responsibilities ahead,” he said.
Salang also urged more young Dayaks to step forward and be actively involved in Pewaris, assuring them that their participation would not only aid their personal growth but also benefit their community.
“The future of the Dayak people depends on how well we prepare our youth today. If we want to see continued progress, we must ensure that Pewaris remains strong and continues to inspire young leaders to take up the challenge,” he said.
