MIRI: State Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, has urged Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (PETROS) to accelerate the installation of piped gas under the Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) project, particularly for Phase Two, which still has over 500 units awaiting connection.
Speaking after a house visit at Taman Ceria Permyjaya today, Lee highlighted the progress made so far, and emphasised the need to expedite the remaining installations, particularly in preparation for the upcoming Gawai Dayak celebrations in June.
“So far, piped gas has been installed in many homes in time for major festivals.
“For Chinese New Year, we managed to complete several installations, and for Hari Raya, 53 units were finished just in time for the celebrations.
“Now, I am requesting PETROS to complete as many installations as possible before Gawai Dayak so that those celebrating can enjoy the benefits of piped gas for the first time,” he said.
Lee noted that residents who have already received the gas connection have expressed their satisfaction, citing increased convenience and efficiency compared to conventional gas cylinders.
“One resident told me that previously, baking a cake using a gas cylinder took about four hours, but now, with piped gas, it only takes three hours.
“Many are delighted with the improved cooking experience,” he added.
The QTC project has been rolled out in phases.
Phase One saw 100 units completed, while Phase Two includes 115 houses.
Phase Three and subsequent phases will continue as planned.
During his visit, Lee inspected seven households at Lorong 4-5 and Lorong 4-6, where installations under Phase Two had been completed.
Residents expressed gratitude for the project, which has been a financial relief.
Mohd Fakrull Osman, 40, noted that PETROS began the installation in November 2024, with completion in December.
Another homeowner, Nor Mastura Japar, 49, who has lived in the area for a decade, shared her experience before and after the installation.
“Previously, I had to purchase a gas cylinder every week, costing RM26 each.
“Now, with the piped gas installed just before Ramadan this year, I spend less than RM10 for the same duration. It’s much more cost-effective,” she said.
Residents also thanked the Sarawak government for providing free underground gas pipe installations, which have significantly reduced household expenses.
As the project progresses, Lee reminded homeowners that while PETROS connects the gas pipe up to the kitchen, residents must provide their own gas burners.
PETROS will conduct inspections to ensure safe connections before activating the supply.
The QTC project is part of the state’s broader initiative to enhance energy accessibility and affordability for Sarawak residents.
