THE state legislative assembly, the origins of which can be traced back to 1876, when it was known as the general council, has always been steadfast in its commitment to prioritise the welfare of the people.

Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said in every session the focus had been on addressing the concerns of the people.

“Throughout the years, similarities have emerged in the DUN sessions, transcending party lines. Beyond engaging in debates and formulating legislation, honourable members actively raise issues to champion the well-being of the people at various levels, be it within their respective constituencies, Sarawak, or the nation,” he said.

“These issues are approached in diverse manners, with some members infusing humour, others adopting a serious tone, and a few expressing their concerns forcefully.

“However, all share a common objective of advancing Sarawak and Malaysia while serving their constituents.”

He added that the role of the opposition members in providing checks and balances was acknowledged, but emphasised that the government members also play a crucial part in ensuring accountability.

Their contributions, he said, involve offering constructive warnings and recommendations based on factual evidence to address a range of issues, rather than relying on populist sentiments, sensitivity, or inconsistency to garner support.

“Notably, the government has consistently demonstrated responsiveness to the concerns raised.

“While some issues are resolved before the commencement of each session, others are revisited if satisfactory solutions have not yet been reached.

“During these deliberations, honourable members have the opportunity to share successful government projects or initiatives, as well as bring attention to pending matters requiring both federal and state government intervention,” he explained.

He said that the effective allocation of funds was a key factor to resolving the issues presented.

“The success of revenue generation efforts is exemplified in Sarawak’s increasing income.

“Funds derived from income, including taxpayers’ contributions, are strategically utilised to propel Sarawak’s progress at an accelerated pace.

“Investments in bridge construction and school infrastructure are prioritised, directly benefiting the people of Sarawak,” he explained,

The prudent management of finances within the government is evident, with stringent financial processes in place to uphold integrity and efficiency, he added.
