KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputera Automotive Entrepreneurs Association (PEKEMA Sarawak) hosted a meaningful Ramadan Iftar event, an annual gathering that brought together orphans from Kompleks Kebajikan Laila Taib.

The event last night (Mar 16) at Dewan Hikmah, Petra Jaya, was graced by the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Fadillah commended PEKEMA for its active involvement in corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives alongside its business ventures and congratulated the organisation for its contributions to charitable causes, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.

“In the context of Ramadan, it is a religious obligation for us to give donations, not only in the form of zakat but also through charity to those in need. This is the beauty of Islam,” he said.

Fadillah emphasised that Islam teaches individuals to share their wealth with designated groups, known as asnaf, through zakat, which purifies both wealth and the soul, while also highlighting the importance of nurturing and purifying the heart through worship and generosity to foster harmony in society.

The event saw PEKEMA Sarawak distributing cash donations to 100 children in attendance, aimed at assisting them in preparing for Ramadan and the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations.

“Although our contribution may be modest, we hope it provides some relief and joy for these children,” said PEKEMA Sarawak president Datuk Ismail Saufi.

“While we are engaged in business, we never forget our duty to give back to those in need. Ramadan is the perfect time to share our blessings, ensuring these children do not feel left out during this holy month,” he added.

Earlier in the day, PEKEMA Sarawak organised the ‘Juh Shopping’ programme, distributing 200 shopping vouchers to underprivileged children across Kuching, enabling them to purchase essential items for Hari Raya and partake in the festive spirit.

Ismail also acknowledged the collaboration of community service centres, whose efforts helped identify and reach out to children in need.

“With their cooperation, we were able to ensure that this assistance reaches those who truly deserve it. We hope to continue such efforts in the future for the betterment of society.”
