Pedestrian severely injured as out-of-control pick-up truck wreaks havoc

The scene of the accident that left an elderly pedestrian severely injured after a pick-up truck struck him and caused the bank’s window to shatter.

KUCHING: An elderly pedestrian sustained severe injuries after being hit by a pick-up truck in front of a bank along Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho last night (Jan 18).

Kuching police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah in a statement, said that the accident happened at around 8pm and involved three vehicles in the parking space in front of the bank.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a pick-up truck, driven by a man in his 60s, had gone out of control and struck the victim outside the bank.

“The victim, also in his 60s, sustained serious injuries to his left leg and head, and is currently being treated at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) emergency unit,” he said.

The impact of the crash shattered the bank’s window. Two parked vehicles and the exterior wall of a nearby house was also damaged when the driver was reversing his vehicle.

Mohd Farhan added that the case is being investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Traffic Act 1987, which carries a fine up to RM10,000 and imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months.

Police have urged those with information regarding the accident to contact traffic investigating officer Insp Saundri Govinda Rajoo at 011-27549620, 082-259900 or go to the nearest police station.
