SIBU: The Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) is calling for volunteers to assist in relief and recovery efforts following the devastating floods in Bintulu.
According to its President Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, they are looking for around 150 volunteers from Bintulu.
“In addition to that we have over 70 volunteers from the service centre. We will also bring in volunteers from here (Sibu) if needed.
“Assets such as boats and other equipment will be deployed if required,” he said when speaking to reporters at PDP’s Chinese New Year Open House at Li Hua Commercial Centre here today (Jan 30).
He added that they had also received assistance from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in Miri and Sibu, while teams from Labuan and Sabah would be arriving soon, depending on the situation.

Meanwhile, commenting on the current situation in Bintulu, Tiong, who is also the Bintulu MP, said that floodwaters in some affected areas had begun to recede.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and are working together with the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
“Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Uggah Embas is also on his way to Bintulu to visit the temporary evacuation centres. I will also be heading straight there after this to provide assistance,” he added.
Earlier, PDP in a Facebook post said that they were looking for volunteers to help with the ongoing flood disaster in Bintulu.
“Our organisation is seeking dedicated volunteers to join us in providing aid and support to those affected by natural disasters. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in their recovery,” it said.
Those interested in volunteering can contact Anong (017-8501785) in Bintulu or Stephen (012-8717885) in Miri.
Yesterday (Jan 29), Bintulu MP Tiong went viral on social media after he was seen braving the rain in a boat to help evacuate flood victims in Bintulu.
“In these difficult times, let’s support and help one another. My team and I, along with all relevant agencies, will do our best to assist everyone. Stay strong, my dearest friends. I know it’s tough—hang in there,” he wrote in a Facebook post yesterday.
Tiong’s decision to join the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in the evacuation efforts—despite it being the first day of Chinese New Year, a time usually spent with family—has been widely praised by the public.
