KUCHING: The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Satok branch will continue its efforts to improve education standards in the area especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki said these efforts will focus on primary school students in the Satok constituency.

He said in the coming year, more activities, including STEM-related carnivals, will be organised.

“Earlier this year, we successfully held a STEM carnival at SK Merpati Jepang, attracting around 2,000 to 3,000 visitors.

“As a follow-up, we will organise STEM 3.0 to further raise awareness and exposure, not only for students but also for parents,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the PBB Satok Branch Delegates Meeting for the 2024-2027 session held at Merdeka Palace Hotel here on Saturday.

Ibrahim also stressed the importance of involving parents in these efforts, especially in addressing post-COVID challenges where some students struggled with basic literacy and numeracy skills.

“To address this, we engaged with parents to ensure their children could acquire these essential skills.

“We organised special tuition programmes lasting three months to a year, targeting students from Primary 1 to Primary 5. Some could neither read nor write, which was concerning. Fortunately, the project turned out to be a success,” he added.

He said the special tuition programme will also be expanded to include secondary school students, focusing on core subjects such as Mathematics and Science.

“When students complete Form 5, we will provide career talks and guidance on courses aligned with the state’s priorities in areas such as digital technology, hydrogen, renewable energy, and the energy transition.

“We encourage students to pursue fields like engineering, science, and technology that support these emerging industries,” he added.

He also said education is among the main resolutions to be discussed during the meeting, alongside development and welfare initiatives.

The meeting earlier gathered around 400 delegates, and was attended by PBB Satok branch secretary and political secretary to the Premier, Abdul Samat Gany; political secretary to the Premier and meeting coordinator for the PBB Satok Delegates Meeting John Nyigor.
