KUCHING: The 8th Annual Dinner of the Power Aquatics Swimming Club (PASC) celebrated the club’s achievements, with swimmer Chereen Ngo Yirui recognised for her key role in Sarawak’s success at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian lauded the athletes’ efforts, particularly Chereen, who clinched two bronze medals for Sarawak.
“Aquatic sports played a crucial role in Sarawak’s overall success at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024.
“The Sarawak swimming team secured third with 9 gold, 1 silver and 7 bronze medals while the diving team emerged as champions, winning 9 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
“I am proud that a swimmer from PASC, Chereen Ngo Yirui, contributed in the medal tally in SUKMA when she won two bronze medals,” he said in a text speech read out by Sarawak Premier’s political secretary Kho Teck Wan at the 8th PASC Annual Dinner here last night (Jan 4).
PASC athletes have been active on both the national and international stages in 2024, competing in 15 competitions, with standout performances in the SEA Age Group Swimming Championships in Bangkok, where Malaysia’s water polo team clinched a bronze medal-five players from the team were PASC members.
Looking ahead, Dr Sim shared his excitement for Sarawak’s role in hosting the 2027 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), marking a historic first for the state.
He expressed confidence that athletes like Chereen and others from PASC will continue to represent Sarawak with distinction on the regional stage.
“The results we have witnessed so far give me great hope that many athletes from this club will rise to the occasion and make their mark in the years to come,” he said.
Additionally, he extended his gratitude to all those who support PASC, including sponsors, parents, coaches, and volunteers.
He encouraged everyone to continue fostering the spirit of excellence that has become synonymous with PASC.
The evening also saw the announcement of RM43,000 in incentives, which will be distributed to 69 swimmers and water polo players in recognition of their dedication and success.
