KUCHING: A section of the Pan Borneo Highway along Jakar junction is expected to be opened for public use before the Hari Raya celebration.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the contractors involved has committed to ensure the road is passable by March 25.
“Today, we are visiting Jakar junction and found that this is the remaining part of the Pan Borneo Highway that is not ready.
“A portion will be open to traffic before Raya.
“However, there are issues on the other side involving a stretch of 100 metres and hopefully this can be ready by April,” he said during the site visit in Sarikei today.
Uggah, who is also the Infrastructure and Port Development Minister, said the stretch is a dual carriageway.
He urged contractors to speed up the remaining section to ensure full completion by the end of April.
He also addressed concerns raised by local residents and Sarikei Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii regarding the need for a traffic light at the Jakar junction.
“However, the Ministry of Works deemed it unsuitable for a highway of this type.
“As an alternative, a P-turn will be constructed approximately 500 meters from the junction on both sides, significantly reducing the distance compared to the proposed P-turn which was five kilometres away.
“We hope this work can start and be completed soon,” he said, adding that the Pan Borneo Highway is now 99.6 per cent completed.
