KOTA KINABALU: Twenty-four Miss Scuba International contestants recently participated in a beach cleaning at Mabul Island here.

The cleaning activity aims to encourage the contestants to participate in a simple effort to prevent trash from flowing into the ocean, affecting the health of both human and marine lives.

Mie Otani, from Japan, after picking up a rusty mini handheld fan from the beach, said, “This device has brought a lot of convenience into our lives and it is sad to see it ends up here.”

The contestants also went for diving trips in Sipadan Island which is home to hundreds of stunning coral reefs and over a thousand species of fish.

They had the opportunity to witness an amazing underwater scene as they dive among the green sea turtles, whitetip reef sharks, angel fish and schools of bumphead parrotfish among others.

“Diving provides an opportunity for us to witness the real wonders of the ocean, hence, to make more effort to protect the nature,” said Michaela, from Australia, who also happens to major in Marine Science.
