KOTA PADAWAN: A total of 5,910.39 kg of recyclables and e-waste, 10.72 kg of other household waste (OHW) and 791.7 kg of used cooking oil have been collected by Padawan Municipal Council (PMC).

The collection, which is under the Buy Back Campaign for Recycled Items, Electrical/Electronic Waste, Collection of Used Cooking Oil and Donation of the Used Clothing 2025 was done during the council’s last event on Mar 8.

“The campaign, which runs monthly from February to November 2025 across various locations under MPP’s jurisdiction, encourages the public to bring recyclable materials — such as plastics, paper, metals, and e-waste — to be weighed and purchased according to market rates.

“Used cooking oil will also be bought by appointed vendors, while used clothes will be donated to the Tzu Chi Foundation Kuching for charity.

“The next campaign will be held on Apr 12 at Balai Raya Desa Wira, Lorong 20 and the public is encouraged to participate and do their part for a cleaner environment,” the council said in its statement.

In addition to monthly collection, PMC added that quarterly OHW collection, covering scheduled hazardous waste will take place on June, September and November.

“OHW below 1kg is accepted free of charge, while 1-3kg will be charged at RM2.30/kg. For waste above 3kg, commercial rates apply,” PMC added.

The campaign supports several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 14 on Life Below Water, Goal 15 on Life on Land, and Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.

These alignments underscore MPP’s long-term commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

In 2024, the council collected 29,701.63 kg of recyclables, e-waste, and clothing, and 3,009.20 kg of used cooking oil — showcasing strong community participation.

PMC hopes to build on this success and calls on the public to continue supporting Sarawak’s green vision for a sustainable future.
