MIRI: Police here have made a significant breakthrough in their fight against drug trafficking with the arrest of two local men and the seizure of a substantial haul of illicit drugs, valued at nearly RM400,000.
The suspects, aged 41 and 50, were apprehended during a raid conducted on January 9, at a property in the Krokop area.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Sarawak police headquarters, alongside the Miri District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (BSJND).
District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that the raid uncovered 1,579.6 grammes of Ecstasy pills and 4,193 grammes of methamphetamine, with a combined street value of RM397,941.50. Additionally, a vehicle worth an estimated RM8,000 was confiscated as part of the operation.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days to assist with investigations. The case is being pursued under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties, including the possibility of a death sentence or life imprisonment with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
In a statement, the Miri District Police urged the public to report any information regarding drug trafficking activities to their nearest police station, emphasising the importance of community involvement in tackling the drug menace.
