Over 2,000 cases resolved by Native Court magistrates

SARAWAK Native Court magistrates have resolved a total of 2,370 cases (50.6 percent) of civil law cases under their jurisdiction as of February 28.

Native Laws and Customs Assistant Minister Datuk John Sikie Tayai said of the figures, a total of 4,684 civil suit cases were registered.

“Cases that have yet to be resolved are 2,314 cases (49.4 percent) while, for the appeals for the Bumiputera community under the jurisdiction of the Resident’s Native Court registered were 1,657 cases,” he said in response to a question from Yussibnosh Balo (GPS-Tellian) at the August House.

Sikie also pointed out that 269 cases (16.2 percent) had been resolved and 1,388 cases (83.7 percent) were in the progress of being resolved.

Meanwhile, Sikie also pointed out that there were 72 magistrates in the Sarawak Native Courts, which comprised two categories; first category, those appointed on contract on an annual basis consisting of a President, Native Courts of Appeal and two Resident’s Native Court Magistrates and 17 District Native Court Magistrates.

The second category consisted of 52 Ex-Officio comprising 12 Resident’s Native Court Magistrates and 40 district officers or District Native Court Magistrates.
