KUCHING: Over 1,000 visitors flocked to the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) for a weekend of fun, fitness and cultural celebration at the recent Batang Ai Hydro Day.

Organised by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Power, the event coincided with Global Hydropower Day, an initiative by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) to highlight the importance of sustainable hydropower in clean energy development.

“The Batang Ai Run is an annual event that promotes a healthy lifestyle for both Sarawak Energy staff and the local community.

“It’s a chance to showcase the positive impact of the Batang Ai HEP and our commitment to community engagement, while promoting healthy habits,” said SEB Power chief executive officer (CEO) Ir. Bunyak Lunyong.

The event’s highlight was the Batang Ai HEP Bubble Run 2024, which saw over 400 runners navigate a scenic route along the Batang Ai reservoir. The top 10 finishers in each category received cash prizes, and soap bubbles were blown along the course to add to the festive atmosphere.

The celebration also aimed to connect with the local community. Visitors learned about the Batang Ai HEP’s operations and sustainability efforts through informative exhibition booths set up by The Social Security Organisation (PERKESO), National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), Lubok Antu police headquarters, Sarawak Skills, Politeknik Betong, Yayasan Sarawak International School, and Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

Popular Iban singer Ramles Walter entertained the crowd, while students from Sarawak Energy’s adopted schools in Lubok Antu presented dance routines.

Traditional games like ‘Pekit Nyumpit’ (blowpipe competition), ‘Pekit Batak Tali’ (Tug of War) and ‘Pekit Belanda Dalam Guni’ (sack race) offered a taste of local traditions.

Attendees also enjoyed lucky draws and a variety of local delicacies from food stalls.

The Batang Ai HEP, commissioned in 1985, is Sarawak’s first hydroelectric plant and is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, marking a significant milestone in the state’s journey towards renewable energy.
