KUCHING: The Orang Ulu community is mourning the loss of a beloved matriarch, Datin Seri Devong Anyie, who passed away peacefully at 10.30am today at the Tajang Family Residence.

Surrounded by her loved ones in her final moments, Devong leaves behind a profound legacy of compassion, community service, and cultural pride.

She is survived by her husband, Datuk Seri Tajang Laing, eight children, one stepdaughter, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends and family describe her as a beacon of generosity, wisdom and unwavering faith.

Her contributions to society earned her the love and respect of many, particularly within the Orang Ulu community, where she played a vital role in promoting unity, tradition and education.

A wake is currently being held at her residence at 79, Elopura Villa, Bukit Antu, Jalan Batu Lintang Lima here, and will continue until the morning of Monday, April 14.

Among those who paid their respects were Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development Deputy Minister, Datuk Martin Ben, wife of the late Tan Sri James Masing, Puan Sri Corinne Masing, Senator Susan Anding and Senator Pele Peter Tinggom.

Following the wake, the funeral cortege will proceed to her hometown of Uma Nyaving, located in the Bakun Resettlement Scheme, Belaga, where she will be laid to rest.
