KUCHING: The police issued a total of 4,418 summonses for various traffic offences during their Ops Selamat.

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said among the offences were driving over the speed limit (2,322), driving licence offences (182), dangerous loads (78), registration number offences (103), modification offences (75), obstruction or parking (939) and other offences (719).

Alexson said the police also focused on traffic congestion caused by increased number of road users during the festive season.

“A total of 27 locations with frequent congestion are the focus of the traffic police. For this Chinese New Year 440 policemen were deployed,” he told reporters during Ops Motosikal along Kuching-Samarahan road yesterday.

Furthemore, Alexson said, as of yesterday, 187 road accidents were reported. The number decreased by 36 cases or 16.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Alexson said there were two fatal accidents over the four-day period compared to eight cases in the previous year. This was a decrease of six cases or 75 per cent.

Lastly, he advised all road users to abide by traffic rules to reduce the number of road accidents this festive season.
