KUCHING: Sarawak recorded a total of 332 road accident cases over six days from March 29 to April 3 during the implementation of Ops Selamat 24 in conjunction with the 2025 Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
According to Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mancha Ata, this figure shows a decrease from 354 cases recorded during Ops Selamat 22 in 2024 to 332 cases in Ops Selamat 24 in 2025 – a reduction of 22 cases.
“A total of five fatal accidents were recorded during the implementation of Ops Selamat 2025, compared to seven cases during Ops Selamat 2024 – a decrease of two cases,” he said in a statement today.
Mancha added that the number of fatalities also decreased from seven in 2024 to five during Ops Selamat 2025.
“Among those involved in fatal accidents, motorcyclists accounted for the highest number of casualties, with three deaths out of the total five fatalities recorded.
“This was followed by one fatality involving a four-wheel drive vehicle and another involving a lorry,” he said.
He said that the causes of accidents during the Ops Selamat 2025 period included driver negligence and carelessness such as speeding leading to loss of control, head-on collisions, failure to observe junction rules, and rear-end collisions.
“Sarawak police issued a total of 6,707 summonses to road users for various traffic offences during Ops Selamat 2025, which is a decrease of 2,097 compared to the previous year.
“The drop in summonses issued during Ops Selamat 2025 was due to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) focusing more on advocacy and providing services to ensure smooth traffic flow.
“Nonetheless, targeted enforcement against offences likely to cause road accidents was still carried out,” he added.
Mancha said overall, Ops Selamat 24/2025 by the Sarawak Police Contingent successfully implemented a strategy that included Ops Lancar and Omnipresence, Show of Force, Enforcement by Objective, and the promotion of noble values to ensure effective traffic dispersal responses and to monitor accident-prone locations.
“The police advise all road users to always comply with traffic rules and urge everyone to prioritise their safety and the safety of their loved ones while on the road,” he said.
