BINTULU: The Bintulu Divisional Health Office has initiated an operation aimed at detecting and controlling measles outbreaks across various residential areas within the district.

Measles, a highly contagious viral illness known to primarily affect children but can afflict individuals of any age group, manifests with respiratory symptoms alongside a distinctive skin rash.

Transmission of the virus occurs through respiratory droplets dispersed during sneezing and coughing, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces and objects.

In an official notice, Bintulu Health officer Dr Melvin Chung said that the operation will be held from 5 pm to 8pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 5pm on weekends.

The operation started last Monday (Mar 11), however, it did not specify the duration of the operation or when it will end.

The affected residential areas include Pasar Lama Bintulu, Taman Sri Dagang, Kampung Sinong, Kampung Dato, Kampung Masjid, Kampung Sebiew, Taman Sebiew, Taman Chin Lee, and Flat Millennium.

Activities encompassing detection and control will entail identifying children exhibiting measles symptoms and compiling data on the vaccination status of children aged seven years and below.

Residents are urged to extend full cooperation to health officials by granting access to their residences and providing their children’s immunisation records for verification purposes.

For any inquiries or assistance, members of the public are encouraged to contact the Bintulu Health Office operations room at 086-315235.
