KUCHING: As Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaches, many are preparing to host and attend open houses, keeping the tradition alive.

Open houses are a time for families, friends, and communities to come together, strengthening bonds over food and shared festivities.

For some, it remains a cherished annual tradition, while others are adapting to modern ways of celebrating.

Sarawak Tribune spoke to several locals to find out whether they plan to host or attend open houses this Aidilfitri.

My family and I have a tradition of hosting an open house every year during Aidilfitri. My parents love cooking for others, and we warmly welcome family and friends to celebrate Hari Raya with us. Once, we even hosted an open house for seven days straight! I truly enjoy seeing everyone come together, catching up, and sharing special moments during this festive season.

In previous years, I would attend open houses when invited. However, this year, I plan to host one myself, likely on the fourth or fifth day of Aidilfitri. It is a great opportunity to reconnect with family and friends and strengthen our bonds. Since it’s not something we do every day, this festive season is the perfect time to bring everyone together. After all, it only comes once a year.

Every year, I attend open houses hosted by family and friends who invite me, usually going wherever I’m welcomed. This year, I plan to do the same — visiting open houses to reconnect with old friends, catch up, and strengthen family bonds.

I used to host an open house every year, but after my grandmother passed away in 2022, my family stopped the tradition. I prefer attending — it’s much less tiring! You just eat, catch up, and relax, unlike hosting, which feels like a full-on mission. This year, I might host a small gathering for close family, friends, and neighbours. Hosting may be exhausting, but seeing guests leave with smiles makes it all worth it.
