OITA: John Widmer, an Australian national and believed to be Himeshima Island’s only foreign resident, is turning heads with his vibrant Ozi Cafe, hoping to boost local tourism.

Located in southwestern Japan, the café, painted in bold green and yellow, greets ferry passengers as they arrive.

Widmer, 64, opened the café in May 2023, driven by a love for coffee and a desire to share a taste of home. He imports roasted beans from Australia, and the brew has quickly gained popularity. “Customers are surprised by the quality of the coffee,” he says. “I always taste the beans before brewing.

” The café’s success is benefiting the local economy, with Walk Japan Ltd now including Himeshima in its tours, attracting foreign visitors. Originally from Sydney, Widmer, a former competitive swimmer, moved to Himeshima after marrying a local. He has since become an active member of the community, teaching swimming and playing volleyball. “We welcome new ideas,” said Shiori Matsubara, a local shop worker. “I hope the island keeps getting livelier.” – BERNAMA
