KUCHING: Sarawak-based OCI TerraSus Sdn Bhd will play a crucial role in OCI Holdings’ expansion into the United States’ (US) solar market by supplying high-purity solar-grade polysilicon for a new solar cell production plant.

According to its statement, OCI Holdings, through its subsidiary, Mission Solar Energy (MSE), is investing RM1.17 billion (USD265 million) to establish the plant in the US.

The facility is expected to begin commercial production in the first half of 2026, with further expansion planned for the latter half of the year.

OCI TerraSus, based in Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu, produces high-purity solar-grade polysilicon using renewable hydropower.

“With an annual production capacity of 35,000 metric tonnes, the company is a key supplier in the global solar supply chain, supporting the manufacturing of silicon wafers and photovoltaic cells.

“This expansion is part of OCI Holdings’ strategy to establish a competitive, non-Chinese solar supply chain, positioning Malaysia as a critical player in the international renewable energy sector.

“The initiative aligns with global efforts to diversify solar production sources and reduce reliance on a single supply region,” it said.

OCI Holdings Chairman Lee Woo Hyun said that the new solar cell subsidiary would strengthen OCI Holdings’ position in the US market while enhancing OCI TerraSus’ global competitiveness.

“Our high-purity solar-grade polysilicon from Malaysia will be the cornerstone of this clean solar supply chain, meeting the growing demand for sustainable energy in the US and reinforcing OCI TerraSus’ role as a leader in the solar industry,” he said.

Looking ahead, he emphasised that OCI TerraSus remains committed to innovation in polysilicon production as global demand for solar energy continues to rise.

This includes adopting advanced manufacturing processes to ensure superior quality and efficiency while further strengthening OCI TerraSus’ role as a key enabler in the transition to clean, renewable energy.

“OCI TerraSus will strive to solidify its position as a global leader in the renewable energy sector by investing in state-of-the-art technologies and leveraging Sarawak and Malaysia’s strategic advantages, including strong government support, highly skilled human capital, robust infrastructure, and sustainable energy sources.”
