SIBU: The number of healthcare facilities equipped with post-bite vaccines has increased from 30 to 91 facilities, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian has revealed.
The Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said this increase will allow the public easier access to post-bite vaccination.
“I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to the healthcare workers, veterinarians, researchers, and organisations who have been at the forefront of rabies prevention efforts.
“I would like to congratulate the Sarawak Health Department for the tremendous effort in increasing the healthcare facilities equipped with post-bite vaccines from 30 to 91 facilities.”
Dr Sim’s speech was read by Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Michael Tiang Ming Tee at the World Rabies Day event here on Thursday (Sept 28).
Dr Sim stated that early post-bite vaccination is proven to prevent rabies, as well as immediate wound washing for 15 minutes with running water.
“However, let us not forget that there is much work still to be done. We must continue to invest in research, education, and access to life-saving vaccines. Conferences such as this one is one way to attract researchers to collaborate and exchange knowledge,” he stressed.
Also present were Sarawak Health Department director Dr Ooi Choo Huck and assistant director (public health) Dr Veronica Lugah, Sarawak Veterinary deputy director Dr Nicholas Jenek, and others.
