KUALA LUMPUR: The National Sports Council (NSC) will discuss the direction to be taken by national shuttlers Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles) and Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong (men’s doubles) in their preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games, says NSC director general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail.

The two pairs, who won silver medals at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, have quit the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), but are still well placed in the world ranking and have the potential to compete at the Tokyo Olympics next year.

He said although the four were under the new training programme being handled by the NSC, there was still a need for the working committee to meet and discuss the matter following their decision to turn professional.

“We will also take into consideration views from the BAM, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and National Sports Institute (NSI),” he told reporters at the National Athletes Welfare Foundation (Yakeb) Special Aid Scheme ceremony at the NSC, Bukit Jalil, here, yesterday. –Bernama
