MIRI: A deep-sea port to serve northern Sarawak is expected to be completed within the next two years, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at a Hari Raya gathering with local leaders organised by the Miri Malay Association at the Indoor Stadium here on Saturday, Abang Johari said the new facility would further boost import and export activities in Miri.

“Once completed, the port will significantly enhance the state’s economy through increased trade,” he said.

He emphasised that the upcoming port would be the only one of its kind located far offshore in deep-sea waters, a strategic decision aimed at providing optimal services to investors and businesses operating in Miri.

“The port is not only poised to facilitate import and export activities in Miri but will also attract cruise ships carrying between 2,000 and 3,000 tourists at a time,” he added.

According to him, this would, in turn, contribute to the growth of the tourism sector in northern Sarawak.
