KUCHING: Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) has denied allegations that the party has underaged members, following rumours circulating on social media recently.
Sarawak DAPSY secretary George Lam stressed that all party members must be over 18 years old, in line with its constitution and dismissed speculation linking Democratic Action Party (DAP) to underage membership as baseless and misleading.
“I would like to clarify that all DAP members, including DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY), must be 18 years old and above.
“Based on the party’s constitution, we do not accept membership from underaged individuals,” he told a press conference held at the party’s headquarters here on Wednesday.
Highlighting that party members are relatively young on average, Lam emphasised that they are still fully capable of leading and contributing to the state’s development, regardless of their age.
He added that DAP always gives opportunities to young people to prove their capabilities in political leadership and administration.
“I believe that DAP is a platform that provides equal opportunities to the younger generation.
“Unfortunately, there are those who try to use age as a political attack,” said Lam.
