KUCHING: Sarawak to hold a snap election is just a hearsay.
“No, no” was the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg spontaneous response when asked for his comment on the possibility yesterday.
The question was posed to him at a press conference held after he chaired a Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) meeting at the party’s headquarters in Jalan Bako.
Recently talks were rife that Sarawak is likely to hold a snap election despite the current term of the state legislative assembly will only expires in June next year.
Abang Johari, who is the PBB president is also Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman.
Traditionally in Sarawak, the date for the state election is the prerogative of the Chief Minister.
The last state election as held on May 7, 2016. In the election, GPS, which was then under the Barisan Nasional coalition, won with a thumping majority. Of the 82 seats at stake, it won 72 seats.
