KUCHING: Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei, the Right Reverend Danald Jute strongly condemned the act of terrorism and senseless killings in Sri Lanka.
The bombing attack on Easter Sunday in several churches and hotels has caused nearly 300 deaths and 500 injured.
He said the atrocity is an attack not just on Christianity, but also on religious freedom everywhere.
“The killings of innocent people who have gathered to worship or to enjoy a holiday are affronts to the universal values and freedoms that we hold dear.
“No one should ever be in fear in a house of worship,” he told New Sarawak Tribune, today.
He then conveyed his deepest condolences and sympathy to those affected and will pray for a speedy recovery for those injured.
“We also pray for the perpetrators, whoever they might be and whatever their motive, that they will realise the awfulness of their crime.
“Violence is never the answer and will not resolve anything. Terrorism must cease,” he stressed.
He then said, as Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace, he called upon all Christians to continue to pray for world peace.
“We must learn to live with our differences, irrespective of one’s colour, creed, religion or conviction,” he pointed out.
As a sign of solidarity with all Sri Lankans, a lighting of candles and a prayer service was held on Sunday night at the courtyard of St Thomas’s Cathedral here.
