KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government does not intend to build new stadiums or sports facilities for the 2027 SEA Games, says Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim.
He explained that the government will upgrade existing sports facilities for use in 2027, including in Sarawak, after coordination and further discussions are held.
“The ministry will hold meetings with the state government after the establishment of the SEA Games 2027 organising committee and secretariat.
“Until now, the government has no intention of building new stadiums or sports facilities for the 2027 SEA Games.
“However, the government will upgrade existing sports facilities for use in 2027, including in Sarawak, after further coordination and discussions.”
He was responding to a question from Roy Angau Gingkoi (GPS-Lubok Antu) who asked about plans to improve stadiums and sports facilities, as well as develop athlete villages across Sarawak to ensure the smooth hosting of the 2027 SEA Games in the state at the Dewan Rakyat here today.
Adam noted that the selection of athletes will be carried out by the National Sports Council in collaboration with the relevant sports associations.
He said it will take place continuously through various channels, including events like the Malaysia Games and other open sports competitions.
“We know that the SEA Games involves between 38 to 44 types of sports. This is one of the sports events available for them to represent the country at the early stage of their careers before moving on to larger events such as the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games or the Olympics.”
