SIBU: Financial constraints should not be a reason for Sarawakians not to pursue their university studies by 2026, said Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
The Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development said this would be possible following the move by the state government to provide free tertiary education to qualified Sarawak students at its five institutions of higher learning by 2026.
He stressed that what remains is for students to meet the educational qualifications required to further their studies.
“Financial constraints should not be a factor preventing Bumiputera students from attending university. In other words, there is no need for a quota system for admission to Sarawak government-owned universities, as anyone can enrol as long as they have the qualifications,” he said.
He was speaking at the Majlis Apresiasi dan Anugerah Kecermerlangan Kolej Vokasional (KV) Sibu 2024 at KV Sibu today.
The Nangka assemblyman added that the Sarawak government has many plans in place to ensure that Sarawak students, especially Bumiputera, can compete and qualify for university admission.
“Some of these plans have already been implemented, such as providing RM15 million to offer free tuition to Form 3 and Form 5 students through the Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP),” he added.
He emphasised that the initiatives and plans by the Sarawak government will create balanced opportunities for students, especially those in rural areas.
“Your pathway is very clear, and the opportunities are wide open. During my time, I was in the dark, and my only option was to become a doctor.
“I had to struggle, and if I didn’t succeed, I had no other path. Now, you have many opportunities available; the only question is whether you choose to take them,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, on technical and vocational education and training (TVET), he said the field is very important and offers huge opportunities for students.
Also present were KV Sibu director Arni Suhaili and deputy director (Learning Sector) Sarawak Education Department Dr Les Met.
