KUCHING: There will be no increase to the current electricity tariffs in Sarawak, said Utility (Sarawak Energy Bhd and PETROS) Deputy Minister, Datuk Ibrahim Baki.

Ibrahim said this was in spite of rising electricity production costs due to the increasing prices of raw materials as well as labour and equipment.

“Many have asked me whether we will increase our electricity tariffs in view of the rising electricity prices in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.

“I am still the SEB Chairman as well as being the minister-in-charge (of SEB).

“This is my promise to you, as long as I am the Chairman, the electricity tariffs in Sarawak will not increase, insya-Allah,” he said.

Ibrahim, who is also Satok assemblyman, made these remarks during the Aidilfitri gathering hosted by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Zone 1 Satok branch at SK Rakyat Bolhassan here on Saturday evening.

He added that Sarawak will maintain its current electricity tariffs, which is the lowest in Malaysia and the region.

“There is no need to worry; your electricity bills will cost the same as usual.

“As long as I am the SEB Chairman, we will find ways to obtain revenue from other sources to balance the (increasing electricity production) costs,” he said.
