KUALA LUMPUR: National wushu queen Tan Cheong Min has set her sights on two New Year resolutions: qualifying for a shot at supremacy in the 2025 Wushu World Championships and Thailand Sea Games.

The Melaka-born athlete, with unmatched mastery in the taolu (individual routine) event said however, that it was not an easy task considering that the competition format is expected to change next year.

Therefore, she said, she would have to work even harder to ensure that she is always on her toes to realise her dreams of top-notch acccolades.

“There are some amendments or improvements regarding the marks and the difficulties but they have not announced it yet. So, not only for me but my team is also making changes on our training to adjust according to the new rules.

“So for me, I will train harder for the selection, and hopefully qualify for the tournaments so I can bring back medals for Malaysia,” she said when contacted by Bernama today.

Meanwhile, when asked about her achievements in 2024, the 26-year-old exponent said she was happy to win several tournaments, including a (nandao or Southern broadsword) gold medal at the Asian Wushu Championship in Macau in September and the Taolu World Cup in October with her nangun (Southern staff) gold.

According to her, the success achieved was not only the result of excellent training but also made possible with dedicated support staff such as the coach and even the encouragement of her family, all components of the backbone of her career.

“So far, I am very satisfied with my performance because I have hit my KPI (key performance indicator).

“I would like to thank my teammates, my coach and the management who are very supportive. Without them I think maybe I can’t even fight,” said Cheong Min. – Bernama
