GEORGE TOWN: The new Road Safety Education (PKJR) module for primary schools focuses on the teaching road safety in a more interactive manner, said Road Safety Department director-general Mohd Nasri Ishak today.

He said the new PKJR module will be an improvement from the previous one in terms of content and delivery.

“We have improved the content to be in line with the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSM). The Primary School Revised PKJR module was developed through a smart collaboration between MIROS (the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research) and the Education Ministry.

“We have improved the teaching concept to be more interactive such as through internet usage,” he told reporters after the launch of the new PKJR module for primary schools, Penang-level, here today.

The event was officiated by Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.

He said 15,000 teachers underwent training for the new PKJR module last year.

Mohd Nasri said the module will be more effective in teaching schoolchildren about road safety and will reduce accident rates among the younger generation who are the biggest group of people involved in accidents.

Earlier, in his speech, Mohd Nasri said throughout the world, almost 3,700 people are killed in road accidents every day and almost 1.35 million die in a year.

“In Malaysia, 6,284 people died in road accidents last year, and Penang recorded 390 deaths from road accidents during the same period.

“This figure may rise each year and it is worrying if no action is taken to increase public awareness of road safety,” he said.

Mohd Nasri added that the PKJR which was started in primary schools in 2007, was a long-term effort beginning with young children to produce a new generation of road users who practice safe, civilised, wise and cautious driving methods.

He said the department will introduce the PJKR module at the nursery, kindergarten and secondary school levels next year. – Bernama
