SIBU: The Women’s Wing of the Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference (SCAC) of the Sarawak Malaysian Methodist Church is starting a project to build a new daycare center for the elderly in Jalan Archer here.
According to Ting Mie Ching, the president of the Women’s Wing, the estimated cost for this project is RM1.5 million, and they will fund it using their own resources.
Ting mentioned that they will repurpose the Methodist Girls’ Hostel, which is no longer in use, by renovating the ground floor to create the daycare centre for the elderly.
A simple ground-breaking ceremony for the project took place today (June 12).
The renovation work is expected to take six months to complete. It will include safety features that comply with the specifications of the fire department and the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
The centre is anticipated to start operating in January 2024 and will have a capacity to accommodate a total of 60 senior citizens. It will function as a daily centre, open from Monday to Friday, between 8 am and 5 pm.
Unlike traditional welfare homes, it will not provide accommodation or overnight services. However, a nominal fee will be charged to its members.
Ting expressed gratitude for the approval of the long-awaited project, which the SCAC Women’s Wing had been applying for it since 2018.
Also present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, SMC Chairman Clarence Ting, and Councilor Joshua Ting, who represented Dudong Assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
