SONG: Immediate repair works on hazardous slopes and landslide-hit areas along Jalan Sipan/Temalat must be expedited to ensure public safety, especially ahead of the upcoming Gawai Dayak celebration, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
The Works Minister stressed that although the road falls under the jurisdiction of the state government, swift action is necessary to prevent any untoward incidents involving road users.
“Proposed repairs for the dangerous slopes and landslide areas along Jalan Sipan/Temalat, estimated at RM2 million and RM5 million respectively, must be implemented without delay,” he said.
He said this in his Facebook post after attending the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) Disaster Reporting Meeting at the Song District Office recently.
He added that his main focus is to ensure that repair works proceed smoothly and on schedule.
Nanta said according to Song District Officer Harry Bruce Edwin, a total of 14 areas with 104 victims were evacuated following floods that occurred between March 21 and 23.
“Around 1,500 residents were affected, though many chose not to move to temporary evacuation centres.
“Six schools were also impacted by the floods, namely SK Nanga Beguang, SK Nanga Temalat, SK Lubok Bedil, SK Nanga Janan, SK Nanga Nansang, and SMK Katibas,” said Nanta.
Nanta also reminded the Public Works Department (PWD) to install warning signs at landslide-prone areas along the Sibu-Kapit route to ensure the safety of road users.
