KUCHING: The song ‘Nang Takdir Kita’, performed by Razak A’ai and produced by Todak Music, highlights the beauty of Orang Ulu culture.
The music video was unveiled on Friday (Dec 13) by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, during the Sarawak Esports Expo 2024 here.
More than just a song, Nang Takdir Kita is a heartfelt tribute to Borneo’s cultural heritage. It tells a love story with deep meaning, blending traditional sounds with modern elements.
The song, sung in Bahasa Sarawak, follows the story of an individual striving to understand a partner deeply rooted in the Orang Ulu culture.
By seamlessly integrating traditional and modern elements, the production honours Sarawak’s cultural uniqueness while reaching out to an international audience.
According to producer and director Ikmal Fareeq, the music video is not merely for entertainment but serves as a platform to introduce and promote Sarawak’s cultural beauty to younger generations.
“We realised there wasn’t a single song specifically highlighting the Sarawak dialect.
“The idea came from Razak A’ai himself, who suggested producing a song that uplifts Sarawak’s culture. This became the foundation of the project,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
The song, entirely written and composed by Razak A’ai, was initially released last year by Todak Music as an experimental piece.
However, after observing listener feedback, the team revamped the track, weaving a stronger narrative and focusing on Sarawak’s identity.
“I believe music is the best medium to bridge tradition and modernity. Through ‘Nang Takdir Kita,’ I hope the audience will come to know and appreciate Sarawak’s colourful and unique culture.
“This song was created to ensure our musical heritage remains relevant, cherished, and passed down to the younger generation,” he added.
The music video also features the talent of Ezra Tekola, a renowned sape player and maker known for his dedication to preserving and promoting Borneo’s indigenous heritage.
Also contributing to the project is Michelle Lungan, recognised for her role as Rinnai in the film “Tegkang” by Josh Nawan, which highlights the culture and lifestyle of Sarawak’s Kelabit community.
Another key figure is Tomi Bulen, who plays the role of the father in the music video. With over 33 years of experience at Sarawak Cultural Village, Tomi is celebrated for his exclusive sape designs.
Razak A’ai, the lead singer, revealed that the song was inspired by his personal experiences.
“The song came to me with the intent to express that I am Sarawakian, as I have spent a long time in Kuala Lumpur. Writing this song in the Sarawakian dialect was my way of proudly declaring that identity,” he said.
He added that the inspiration for the song stemmed from his relationship with his wife, combining his roots in Kuching and her background in Kuala Lumpur.
“As someone born in the Land of the Hornbills, I am proud to produce a piece in Sarawak’s dialect. I deeply appreciate the collaboration with Ezra Tekola, Michelle Lungan, and Tomi Bulen.
“This song is not just for entertainment but also aims to inspire and empower. If this song can provide encouragement to even one listener, I consider that a significant achievement,” he said.
Razak also revealed that Todak Music is currently working on his upcoming album, with recordings completed and plans underway for its launch.
“The recordings are done. We’re just arranging the schedule and marketing plans. I’m waiting for a call from my boss to finalise the album’s launch. Everything is still in the planning stages.
“My hopes for this song are huge. I want people to accept and appreciate the song, and if it inspires even one person, I’ll feel grateful. I hope people listen to it, connect with it, and enjoy it,” he said.
