MIRI: The discovery of a mysterious metal fragment embedded one metre in the ground near a house in Sepupok Niah here on Sunday night has the authorities baffled.

Police are seeking the assistance of Bomba’s Hazardous Material Unit (HAZMAT) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) to identify the object.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said they received a report from a resident in Batu Niah on the discovery of the suspicious object which the public suspected could be from the Chinese Long March 5B rocket.

“Police could not confirm the origin of the metal fragment and have sought help from the Fire and Rescue Department’s HAZMAT team and MOSTI to analyse the object,” he said in a statement today (Aug 1) .

He advised the public to avoid going near the scene because the metal fragment might contain radioactive material.

Alexson urged the public not to speculate or spread false information because it could cause anxiety.
