SEBUYAU: The Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) is optimistic that the commercial collaboration between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) can be finalised soon, enabling the effective implementation of the Sarawak Gas Road Map.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the roadmap provides a clear direction for gas development in Sarawak, and strategic partnerships are essential to its success.
“Sarawak already has the Sarawak Gas Road Map. Sarawak has a comprehensive gas development plan, and what remains is the detailed execution of this Sarawak Gas Road Map.
“To implement the Sarawak Gas Road Map and develop the gas sector in Sarawak, PETROS needs strategic partners. I firmly believe that one of the key strategic partners we can count on is none other than our very own national oil company, PETRONAS.
“I have high hopes and confidence that if this commercial collaboration can be finalised as soon as possible, we will be able to implement the Sarawak Gas Road Map efficiently and effectively,” he said.
He said this during the PETRONAS Memacu Kehidupan and Iftar Perdana PETRONAS programme at AlMuflihin Mosque, here last night (Mar 15).
Julaihi also said the Sarawak Gas Road Map includes initiatives such as increasing the electricity supply across Sarawak using gas as a power generation source.
“For example, we are already using gas to generate 500 megawatts of power in Miri, and in Bintulu, particularly in Samalaju, we plan to develop another gas-powered power plant capable of generating 1,500 megawatts.
“In Kuching, we are planning to generate 5,000 megawatts or 5 gigawatts of power using gas.
“Additionally, we are also looking into developing gas pipeline networks across Sarawak. I believe PETROS can collaborate with PETRONAS on this matter,” he said.
Julaihi welcomed the federal government’s recognition of PETROS as Sarawak’s sole gas aggregator, stressing that it reinforces the state’s role in managing its gas resources.
He expressed confidence that collaboration with PETRONAS would not only drive Sarawak’s gas industry forward but also contribute to Malaysia’s overall economic growth.
In preparation for the upcoming Hari Raya celebration, PETRONAS distributed food baskets and festive treats to 250 underprivileged families in Sebuyau.
The food baskets included essential items such as cooking oil, rice, canned goods, and condiments, while the festive treats featured dates and cookies.
