KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here approved a seven-day extension of the remand for a man suspected of murdering Nurul Asikin Lan, whose decomposed body was found in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja, Tabuan Jaya.

The remand extension for the 23-year-old suspect was issued by Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali until December 29 to allow further investigation under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Earlier, the suspect, accompanied by officers from the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD Kuching), arrived at the Kuching Court Complex at 9am for the remand extension application, as his previous remand period ended today (Dec 22).

On December 18, Kuching District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed that the decomposed body found was that of Nurul Asikin, also known as Amoy, 28, after receiving the results of a DNA test.

This confirmation came shortly after Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata revealed that the suspect admitted to killing the victim after going out with her. She was reported missing on December 5.

The suspect, who was arrested on December 14, also led police to the location where he had disposed the victim’s body, in a drain along Jalan Setia Raja, Tabuan Jaya.

Mancha further stated that the motive for the murder was the suspect’s intention to steal the victim’s jewelry to pawn it for expenses to watch a football match between Malaysia and Cambodia during the 2024 Mitsubishi Electric AFF Cup in Phnom Penh on December 8.
