MIRI: Two army personnel accused of murdering a fellow soldier at Camp Sri Miri have had their case mentioned in the Magistrates’ Court here, with the next date set for May 30, pending further reports.
Muhammad Afiq Syarim, 23, from Bedong, Kedah, and Mohamad Faies Khuzaimah, 21, from Tumpat, Kelantan, appeared before Magistrate Ashok Linggam today.
Both nodded to indicate they understood the charge read to them.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Franklin Ganggan Bennet, informed the court that the matter is still pending several key reports, including the post-mortem, a chemistry report, and formal consent from the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office for further proceedings.
The accused were represented by defence counsel Ranbir Singh Sangha.
The duo face a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, for committing murder with common intention. If convicted, they face either the death penalty or a prison term of not less than 30 years and not exceeding 40 years.
Should the death penalty not be imposed, the sentence also includes no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane.
According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred in the early hours of Mar 24, 2025, between 2.15 am and 3.05 am, at Room 8-G-03 of Block B, LLP Single Soldiers’ Quarters, Kompeni Alpha, 20th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment, at Camp Sri Miri.
The two accused allegedly caused the death of Muhammad Muqriz Aseri.
The case has drawn public attention due to the setting of the alleged crime – a military camp known for its discipline and camaraderie. Investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
Both accused have been remanded in custody pending the next court mention.
