SIBU: Students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sacred Heart were on Saturday given some timely advice on learning from life’s lessons.
“Painful moments often carry the greatest lessons, shaping us as individuals and human beings,” said its Speech Day patron, prominent businessman Tan Sri Clement Hii, urging students to stay focused on their goals.
“I remember that sometime back, as my group diversified into a new area, someone asked me how I could be making the right decisions most of the time.
“I replied: from experiences. Then how do I acquire the experience to make the right decision? Well, from making the wrong decision,” he said at the 2024 SMK Sacred Heart annual Speech Day here.
Hii, who is Group Managing Director of SEG International Berhad and Executive Chairman of HCK Capital Group Berhad, said whether good or bad, every experience has value.
He urged students to stay determined in pursuing their dreams despite obstacles.
“There will be hard times. There is no perfect plan, place, timing, or people. But if we want something enough, we must face roadblocks, pain, suffering, and tough times,” he said.
Towards this end Hii advised students to remain steadfast in their goals while remaining adaptable in their approach.
“Be stubborn about your destination, but flexible in the details. Never compromise on your dreams and aspirations,” he added.
Meanwhile, SMK Sacred Heart Principal David Teo announced that Hii has pledged an additional RM20,000 for SMK Sacred Heart’s annual Speech Day next year to motivate teachers and students in their pursuit of academic excellence.
This extra contribution will supplement Hii’s regular allocations as the patron of the event.
“RM20,000 will be equally divided, with RM10,000 allocated for student awards and RM10,000 for teacher awards,” he said.
At the event, a total of six teachers received the Best Teacher Award, and five students received the Top Student Award, while one received a Leadership Award.
All award winners received certificates and RM1,000 each.
Also present were Sacred Heart School Board of Management Chairman Bishop Joseph Hii, Secretary Dr. Gregory Hii, Sacred Heart Old Students Association President Penghulu Yong King Sung, and SMK Sacred Heart Parent-Teacher Association Chairman Dr Lau Ngi Chuong.
