KUCHING: The Sarawak branch of the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) has addressed growing concerns from parents regarding the unclear labelling on certain snack products sold at a convenience store here.
These complaints highlight issues with confusing product information, inappropriate language use, and questionable safety of the products for children.
MTPN Sarawak, under the leadership of its president Wynson Ong, conducted an inspection of the store in question.
Initial findings revealed that the store sold snacks with packaging that appealed to children but failed to meet legal requirements for clear and comprehensible labelling in Bahasa Malaysia or other languages familiar to local consumers. Additionally, there were questions regarding the safety standards of the products. Photos of the ambiguous labelling have been submitted as evidence.
The council noted the importance of adhering to Malaysian laws and regulations, specifically the Food Act 1983, which mandates compliance with food safety standards, and the Food Regulations 1985, which require clear labelling in Bahasa Malaysia or a language understood by local consumers.
MTPN Sarawak has reached out to relevant authorities to verify compliance with these regulations and ensure corrective measures are taken. It reminded businesses of their responsibility to ensure that all food products meet the required legal standards.
Parents and consumers were urged to exercise caution when purchasing snacks for children and to report any suspicious products to the authorities.
Ong reaffirmed the council’s commitment to protecting consumers, particularly children, from potential food safety risks, pledging continued monitoring and decisive action where necessary.
