SIBU: The Kejohanan Olahraga (Pembangunan) Majlis Sekolah-Sekolah Rendah (MSSR) Zon Luar Bandar Sibu serves as a vital platform for fostering a sporting culture among our youth, said Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
The Federal Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture remarked that such exposure should not be limited to this championship alone, but must continue beyond this event to ensure a lasting impact, ultimately nurturing accomplished athletes for the future.
“Thus, the children before me today are precious gems in need of polishing to shine and represent their area,” he stated.
“I firmly believe that among the participants of this championship, there are those with remarkable athletic talent who may one day represent Sarawak,” he added, speaking through his representative, Councillor Paul Teo, at the opening ceremony held at the Azman Hashim Sports Complex on Wednesday.
Tiong, who is also the Dudong assemblyman, hoped that schools and parents would provide their full support to children actively engaged in co-curricular activities, as would contribute these significantly to their academic success as well.
He also extended his congratulations to the 57 participating schools out of 63, comprising 36 Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) and 21 Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK), with a total of 636 athletes, for their involvement in the athletics championship.
“My deepest appreciation goes to the school committees and the secretariat for their unwavering dedication and commitment to ensuring the smooth execution of this event,” Tiong remarked.
“To the victors, I offer my heartfelt congratulations. To those who may not succeed this time, do not be discouraged. Remember, today’s defeat is merely the beginning of a journey toward greater success in the future.”
“Continue to engage in sports, embrace a healthy lifestyle, and foster unity, harmony, and goodwill through friendly competition,” he added.
Also present at the event were organising chairman and principal of SK Batu 10, Mohd Zaini Abdullah, as well as the principal of SK Sibu Jaya, Jabut Minda.
