SIBU: The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch has called for the establishment of branches in rural areas of the central zone, including Song, Kapit, and Sarikei.
Its chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee said the move aims to strengthen MRCS’s capacity as a volunteer organisation to respond swiftly to floods, landslides, and fires.
“We need to identify and assess potential locations in rural areas to determine the feasibility of setting up branches.
“This is crucial so that, during emergencies, these branches can reach victims faster than government agencies,” he said when met at the MRCS flag sale programme at Pasar Tamu Sibu Jaya, here today (Apr 13).
Chua assured that the Sibu branch will fully support any newly formed units.
“As soon as they contact us, we’ll coordinate and determine the assistance needed,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of training local residents to become qualified first responders.
“I encourage communities to establish branches and undergo first aid training so they can assist during emergencies,” he added.
Today’s event marked the fourth MRCS flag sale held this year, following similar programmes at Star Mega Mall, Central Market, Rajang Park, and Sibu Jaya Market.
The programme was officiated by PDP Central Zone vice chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew.
