MIRI: The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri branch, through its community care and protection unit and the voluntary aid detachment (VAD), recently organised a charitable outreach programme to assist two underprivileged families in Lambir.
The initiative, carried out with the support of local community leader Tuai Rumah Linggie, was led by Dr Uma Devi, chairperson of the community care and protection sub-committee. As part of the visit, Dr Uma delivered an educational talk covering key health and environmental topics, including:
- The dangers of plastic – raising awareness about the harmful effects of plastic use.
- The importance of cleanliness – encouraging good hygiene practices.
- Healthy eating – promoting better nutritional choices for overall well-being.
Following the talk, Mohd Shobri and Dayang Mariamah from the Miri City Council engaged in a discussion with the families, providing information on the various services available to them and how to report concerns to the council.
To reinforce environmental awareness, the council distributed ‘Say No to Plastic’ stickers for the families to display on their doors as a reminder to opt for reusable bags over single-use plastics.
In support of this effort, MRC Miri provided stainless steel food containers, generously donated by anonymous benefactors.
The branch also distributed dry food supplies, clothing, and essential hygiene items to the families.
This charity visit is part of MRC Miri’s ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable communities, with more outreach efforts planned in the future.
The organisation encourages more volunteers and donors to contribute to this meaningful cause, helping to uplift those in need.
